As someone whose self-published first book has quietly crept toward selling 1000 copies over FIVE years, I really appreciate this insight. When we see someone with your platform, we just assume that it's going to be easy for them. Your honest sharing helps me to realize the path is slow and steady for most authors! And I am going to buy a copy of your book very soon… I've just promised myself that I will finish a few other books first!!
I love how transparent you are! I think your sales (and whole creative journey) are so impressive!! And inspiring! I’m trying not to compare your numbers with my future numbers. My art book comes out in 2 weeks and I’m keeping my expectations low. It’s a legit coping strategy, right?! 🤣 My goal is to at least sell as much as my initial advance was!
Amie, this book is a cult classic so ahead of it’s time and it will grow. It lives in my bedside table and it’s a comfort to just look at it.
In terms of these updates I’ve actually been waiting for this one as I’m so invested in your journey. The world is in a dark place- today the news is at it’s worst. But when this notification popped up I thought- yes! How is she doing? (since the epic IC rant on Sunday ;)
I once said to my therapist ‘I know I need a job’ and he said ‘no, its possible to not have a job if you want to dedicate your time to other things’ This was 2014 and I still think about it. It’s radical and complex. I think a book would be what is needed right now.
Thank you for sharing! I'm a self-publishing author learning to sit with low sales and a full heart. Your numbers are brilliant! Cheers to the hard, lovely life xx
I slipped the jacket off mine and marvelled at the art of the cover. I am going to do a post just about that! I was inspired! Then I read some of it too… this is ONLY the beginning and what an awesome one. ✨✨💛✨✨📙
You have at least one copy sold in Germany + my day job's at a bookstore and I ordered We Need Your Art to complete our English section 🤘 (and wrote about it in our recommendations Magazine). just so you know, your book goes places beyond the numbers shared ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow Amie. 12,865 copies sold. That’s insane!!!!!! And I really do believe this book will sell until the end of time, because the world will need our art until the end of time, and the world will need your words until the end of time. Love you, and I’m so flucking proud of you.
I am deeply invested in the children’s book, as I share your work with my kids regularly. Having my teen/tween attend your reading in Brooklyn was really an important experience for our family. My 4 year old has heard you on the IC calls and commented about how you are proud of him, as that’s the only thing he’s heard from the call. :)
What if, a generation of artists didn’t have to relearn We Need Your Art? What if they just learned it right the first time? The potential!
Thank you for sharing so generously, you continually help to break the illusion of overnight success and I think that's important work. You're encouraging me to keep going. x
Congratulations - it’s especially pleasing to see the high UK sales as we’re a smaller country, and to know that one of them was to me when I bought the hardback a couple of months back.
Congratulations, this is wonderful to read, as I take the first tentative steps to make a book baby of my own. Also, if you’d be happy for me to share links to your book events in the LiveStack in person events directory I’d be so happy to share them there too 🩷
Amie, I’m several chapters in and blown away. I don’t think I’ve ever underlined so much in a book before, other than my Bible. (Believe it or not I’m enjoying it even more than Julia Cameron’s book but they do play well together.) Beautifully done! I just finished the chapter on procrastination and it was brilliant. So much grace. So grateful for your creative voice dear one. 😊💕🙌
This book feels like a warm hug and I love every second of soaking up these words. Amie I thank you for your courage and creative endeavors and love being a part of the inspired collective💛

I’ll never get tired of these updates! Such a beautiful reminder it’s not all about launch week.
I literally just got home from the bookstore with my new copy of your book. Could I be 12,866?!? It’s possible!
Thank you, I find your insights so incredibly enlightening. Please don't stop sharing them!
